Our departments research activity is greater than ever. The Alternative Funding Plan has provided support for our department in terms of supporting all types of research activity, including: research grants, published abstracts and published manuscripts. This support has had a very positive impact on our research activity, both in terms of the number of staff involved and the number of active projects. The department currently has research projects ongoing in almost every aspect of anesthesia, including: education, simulation, cardiac anesthesia, acute pain, chronic pain and perioperative medicine.
Our department has a number of resources to assist both staff and residents with their research. Toni Tidy, our Department Research coordinator, can assist with grant preparation and submission, CommonCV development, and REB submissions. Dr. Lehana Thabane is a PhD biostatistician and research methodologist who can assist with protocol development and statistical analysis.
Before launching a new study, we recommend that staff and residents present their project at a Research Interest Group Meeting. These dinner meetings include a methodology presentation followed by one or two research proposal presentations.
Research continues to be a priority for the Department of Anesthesia and it is supported at every level from undergraduate Health Sciences students, to anesthesia residents, anesthesia fellows and faculty. Our research infrastructure is paying off in terms of increased interest in research and we are continuing to grow our depth in several areas, especially: acute and chronic pain, perioperative medicine, and regional anesthesia.
